Pure Water: How to Decide?

Most Popular Options

Reverse Osmosis
We have come to the conclusion that Reverse Osmosis is the best overall option for drinking water based on health, cost and environmental standpoint (least carbon footprint in terms of global warming).   Please see Articles such as “Bottled or Filtered Water?” and “Is Tap Water Safe?”.  Public water contains small amounts of heavy metals, pesticide and herbicide runoffs, and even pharmaceutical drugs.  Reverse osmosis will remove just about every pollutant from the water, provided you have a well-constructed system serviced annually by a good maintenance professional.  We have been making and servicing reverse osmosis systems in Houston, Texas for over 20 years, so you can expect the best from us.
Available as counter-tops, under sink units or with cooler.

Whole House Carbon Filters
If you don’t wish to inhale carcinogenic chemicals such as chlorine evaporating into the air from bathrooms and water-related appliances, use a whole house carbon filter. Shower exposure accounts only for 25% of total. For all around removal of breathable pollutants and higher flow rates, the filter should be sized correctly. Not recommended for non-disinfected water.

Water Softeners
If you want “soft water” for your home, use a water softener for the following benefits:
- smoother skin and hair
- eliminate calcium deposits on glasses, dishes, clothing, bath tub, etc.
- prolong life of appliances
- save on soap, detergent, etc.
The average hardness of water in Houston is 8 grains, which is considered hard water.

Carbon/Lead Filters
If you only wish to improve the taste of your water, use a carbon filter. Do not use it with non-disinfected water.
If you have an old house, and lead in the plumbing is a concern, use a lead/carbon combo. In-line carbon or lead/carbon filters are also recommended for fridges, ice-makers and coffee-makers.

Shower Filters
A good idea for the removal of chlorine, unless you have a whole house carbon filter.
